(07/08) Update: I reached out to local data recovery companies for help with my situation but they didn’t have the expertise to get all of the files we are looking for. The best option was to ship the drives to a nationally recognized data recovery company. After negotiating terms and pricing with the company, they started the process of determining which files could be recovered successfully. Preliminary results of the test files they provided have been positive so there is a higher chance of full recovery compared to our previous attempts to repair the files.Currently, I am in the process of adjusting the data release contract so that the tech team will have enough time to determine whether there are any missing files or unexpected errors with the recovered data. According to the data recovery company, the recovered data will be stored within an external drive and shipped back to my location. Once I receive the shipment, the tech team will analyze whether the recovered files are complete and undamaged. I will provide another update after this step is completed. Thank you for waiting!(06/09) Update: I have negotiated with the former hosting company and purchased the drives that were used for all of the websites. This action wasn’t taken until the end of the billing cycle as it is very costly with no guarantee of success. In the past two weeks, I have attempted to use all known data recovery software to find the SQL files we needed to repair the database. Unfortunately, these software are designed to recover mainstream files like pictures and movies. Lots of common media files were found in the search but not the files we needed. The next step is to hire professional data recovery experts for the database files.If the data recovery experts fail to recover the SQL files, the plan is to create a new xenforo forum that will serve as the permanent forum going forward. However, our efforts to recover the website files will continue since there is still a chance of success. Although unrelated to animesuperhero.com / toonzone.net, we have successfully recovered one of the smaller websites on the former server. I admit it is taking longer than expected to get the website online, but I believe it is very important for the official website to be presented without errors. All of our other websites and subdomains were damaged. Although <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://animesuperhero.com">animesuperhero.com</a> / <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://toonzone.net">toonzone.net</a> is the priority, the database errors from all of the websites hosted on the server are somewhat related to each other. It was decided that the database repair was to be completed for all websites at the same time rather than one at a time. More updates will be provided once the website is almost ready. After an initial investigation, it was clear that the virtualization software malfunctioned. There was an attempt to get the website files on a new virtualization platform, but it failed to work properly.Why wasn’t the virtualization software working properly?I can’t disclose too many details since there are potential legal implications, but the host failed to proactively monitor the server for errors even though we were paying server management fees that included monitoring.Tech staff with years of experience working on the website tried to recover all of the files on the server, but it was very difficult to do so. In particular, database files were damaged and had corrupted tables. It took weeks to conclude that the database couldn’t be recovered by established methods. Unfortunately, our backup files were routed through the virtualization software, so it wasn’t very helpful in the recovery process.We searched for a professional that had experience repairing databases with missing files. Originally, the professional provided an ETA of 7 days, but he continued to extend the time working on the database. It’s already been month since the professional started the process. Recently, the professional said the website would be partially repaired and ready to be online by Easter (04/09/2023), but he failed to deliver once again. The reason for the delay was apparently the large amount of data that accumulated over the lifetime of the site. Currently, there is no better option than to wait until the professional completes the database repair.Why wasn’t there any updates after mid February?It has been a very stressful time for everyone involved in the recovery process. Most of the tech staff are located in Turkiye. Major earthquakes in the region killed and injured many Turkish people, which added to stress levels. As a result, a few members of the tech staff decided to take time off. There were many times where I couldn’t get into contact with them. It was hard to report bad news so I thought it was best not to provide any additional information until everything was close to completion.ConclusionI sincerely apologize to everyone for the extended downtime. There was too much trust placed upon 3rd parties to manage the server so recovery options were limited and time consuming. Steps were taken to avoid future events like this from happening again, starting with the migration to a new server from a different hosting provider along with more reliable server software.
